Howrah Bridge


Howrah Bridge is an iconic symbol of City of Joy attracts many tourists towards Kolkata,  massive steel Bridge connect the two main cities Kolkata and Howrah in West Bengal. It is also known as Rabindra Setu in the name of great poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. But it is popularly known as Howrah Bridge. Approx 3,00,00 vehicles and 450,000 pedestrians runs both the ways freely. 



According to Wikipedia, in 1862 the government of Bengal advised George Turnbull to establish a Bridge over Hooghly River. After few years, Pontoon Bridge was built. But due to increasing traffic and popularity of the City, a committee was appointed in 1855-56 for constructing a bridge across it. The Calcutta Port Trust was founded in 1870 and with this the government of India passed Howrah Bridge Act in the year 1871 under the Bengal Act ix of 1871.







Maintenance.





Most important fact is to maintain the bridge due to pollution, human spitting, rush driving, bird excreta and corrosion due to weather. For the safety, many cameras were placed. Two coat of aluminum paint with primer of zinc is used to paint.
